Frankenstein (1931) Universal's
follow up to Dracula shook the foundations of horror with one of the
most interesting of creations. Boris Karloff's portrayal of the
innocent creature thrust into a world he did not understand is still the
gold standard of the sympathetic monster. Now Karloff's performance
and the monster make-up created by the legendary artist Jack Pierce may
be the most memorable elements of the movie but I will always have a
soft spot for Colin Clive's tortured Dr. Henry Frankenstein as this may
be the only movie that has a mad scientist driven sane by his creation.
Things I love
• Frankenstein’s laboratory which is the basis of every mad scientist’s lab since.
• “Oh, in the name of God! Now I know what it feels like to be God!”
• The Creature reaching up for the sun.
• The Creature actually never murders anyone as the death of Fritz and Dr. Waldman could be labeled manslaughter and self defense and the poor death of little Maria accidental.
• Insta-Mob!
